The Daily Boost aims to encourage children and young people to do 15 minutes of organised activity at school every day. The programme was launched in summer 2018 with the aim of encouraging schools to incorporate the Daily Boost activities in to their normal day.
The design, mascot and colour scheme were all chosen by Leicestershire children to make the programme as pupil-led as possible.
The idea is that activities can be available before school, at lunchtime, after school, or during the school day in an 'active lesson'. With the aim to encourage children and young people to walk, run, skip, hop or jump around a set lap or loop at school. Or simply do their favourite sport or activity that gets them active – dancing, cycling, scooting, anything!
On Wednesday, 3rd of July, the Daily Boost Programme visited Ab Kettleby school in Melton Mowbray, along with the Mascot, Zoom and Anita Bird, Daily Boost Programme Lead, to award the children for their commitment and achievement to Daily Boost activities.
The occasion was also captured by BBC East Midlands Today who documented the mornings events for the Evening News programme. Reporter, Jo Healey was able to interview the children to hear of their experiences of the programme, as well as the school Head Teacher, Mr Toon to discuss the difference it had made to physical activity levels in the school.
The children took part in their normal Daily Boost session on the school playing field. With children running, skipping, cycling, playing football and even chasing mascot, Zoom!
The children were then awarded with their boost bands in a special assembly, led by Anita Bird. Each child was given 2 Boost Bands each, worth 1000 minutes to mark the 2000 minutes achieved by each of the 64 pupils in school, one of the highest number of minutes achieved by a school in Leicestershire.
Anita Bird, Daily Boost Lead at Leicestershire & Rutland Sport said:
"It's so great to see the children taking part in this fantastic initiative! One of the best things about Daily Boost is that it is pupil-lead programme, unique to Leicestershire, that allows children to do the activities they enjoy the most. Today has showcased what a difference the Daily Boost can make to physical activity levels in schools, and we would like other schools in the area to take up this opportunity."
